Nostalgia. The Best Medicine.

So the other day I was talking to a certain someone on the phone, and over the course of the conversation, we came to happen upon the subject of baby nudity. Don't ask me how, or why, we just ended up talking about how my younger sister Jessica could (and did) fall asleep just about anywhere as a baby, whereas I could only fall asleep in a moving vehicle.[Here's a picture of her sleeping halfway up the concrete stairs outside of our apartment with a half-eaten sucker.]
Jessica also had this thing about taking baths all the time, and I, in all my baby-goodness, simply liked being naked. No bath had to be involved so long as there was nudity. Preferably full-frontal nudity. Now chillax, I was a baby, and those diapers were just terrible.. You understand. Anywho, this subject subsequently caused me to remember that a certain collection of photos of myself exists, and that said collection contains proof of my constant childhood de-clothing. I promised an exclusive viewing of the photo's at a later date, and the conversation continued. The next day I dug my photo album out of the keepsake box in my closet and proceeded to flip through the pages, laughing a little, cringing a little, and mostly just longing to be back at the beach in San Diego where I grew up. Seeing the pictures again after such a long time was just the inspiration I needed to produce a short little clip of literature about the magical time I remember before Trigonometry homework, hormones, boy drama, and teenagerdom ensued. I lovingly call it, When I Was Five.

When I was five, I knew it all.
I had it going on.
Chased boys at recess,
Pasted some macaroni and beans.
Hiked my backpack way up.
The works.
Did it really matter
Where the money came from?
No. Not really.
Money was just code for trouble.

When I was five, I had few toys,
But things I made myself.
Cardboard boxes
Became my castle and kingdom.
But I was no princess.
You could find me swimming the moat.
Never stopped to save my life.
Who needs baths anyway?
No. Nobody really bathes anymore.
That’s just what your mother tells you.

When I was five my Daddy
Was the king of everything.
He could roller-skate
Like nobody’s business.
That’s just what Daddy did.
All he had to do was smile
And everything was all better.
What was there really to worry about?
No. Everything was just magical.
When I was five.

NOTICE:

IN AN EFFORT TO GET PEOPLE TO LOOK
INTO EACH OTHER'S EYES MORE OFTEN,
THE GOVERNMENT HAS DECIDED TO ALLOT
EACH PERSON EXACTLY ONE HUNDRED
AND SIXTY-SEVEN WORDS, PER DAY.

When the phone rings, I put it
To my ear without saying hello.
In the restaurant I point
At chicken noodle soup. I am
Adjusting well to the new way.

Late at night, I call my long
Distance lover and proudly say
I only used fifty-nine today.
I saved the rest for you.

When he doesn't respond, I know
He's used up all his words
So I slowly whisper I love you,
Thirty-two and a third times.
After that, we just sit on the line
And listen to each other breathe.

So I've got this gushy mushy weak spot for poetry. Especially tilt-your-head-quirky-lemonlimey-wait-a-second-that-was-a-poem? poetry. On the inside wall of the nook my bed sits in, I tape up little papers with things like this delicious piece written on them. It's like having a cool scar to start conversations with, except people actually have to be there. It's not really portable... I also write down the crazy random things my friends say to put up. It's my little word-cove, and it keeps me warm at night. :)

I'm gonna bat my long sweet lashes over you...

Hello, mind.
What were you thinking?
Why did you bring that up—
Today?

Hello, brain.
How could you do this?
How could you bring me to this—
Today?

Hello, world.
Here’s how I come wrapped.
Here’s how you’ll find me in my package;
My stark white sanity wrap.

Hello, sky.
Fly me away now.
Lift me into your arms,
And baby, don’t you look back.

Cause I’m a wandering lonesome kind of girl,
I’m not going to go changing for the world,
And I’m not going to bat my lashes
Just for you—
Even though I know you want me to.
Cause I know who I am,
And that’s true.

Sometimes I think.
And then I think harder...
And I think how I’d think if I
Didn’t know at all...

Sometimes I wonder.
No, I really w o n d e r...
Sometimes I dream, delusion, ponder why?
Sing my blue blue blue moon lullaby.

Sometimes it’s cold.
I curl up tighter.
Sometimes I wish upon that first star,
Wish hard—
For someone else.

Sometimes I stop
And then I go faster.
Sometimes I write a million miles an hour,
And don’t remember half.

Cause I’m a wandering lonesome kind of girl,
And I’m going to step out and see the world,
And I’m not going to bat my lashes—
Just for you.
But I wouldn’t be too worried about it
If I were you.

Yeah I’m not going to bat my lashes
Bat my lashes
Bat my lashes
...
I’m going to bat my long sweet lashes over you.

Good morning, sunshine.
You’re looking so fine today.
You’re looking like a million bucks went to
A stock no one would buy.

Good morning, life.
So good of you to drop by.
But if you’ll excuse me,
I’m quite busy today.

Good morning, beautiful.
I missed your sweet face.
I missed you when you passed by,
And now I’m paying the price.

Good morning, boy.
Come take my hand now.
Take me in your back seat sooo sweet hard beat fast treat
Good day good day good day... Melody.

Take me to the moon.
Don’t think we’re coming back anytime soon.
So leave your message at the beep dear,
But don’t expect to hear—from me.

Cause I’m a wandering lonesome kind of girl.
Don’t you dare try and show me the world.
Cause I’ve got a handle on it—
No really, I do.
I’ve got my bat-me-lashes on the wheel,
And I stop, and I go, and I dream, and I think,
And I sing, and I dance, and I feel

Yeah I’m a wandering lonesome kind of girl.
I’ll get around to you, dear world.
But now I’ll see you to the door.
Don’t think I’ll see you ‘round no more.
Don’t think I’ll need my cup of joe
To keep me spinnin’—
Round I go.
To keep me hangin’ on—
Don’t keep me hangin on—
Don’t think I’m hanging on just for you...

I’m a wandering lonesome kind of girl,
And I miss you
Dear, dear world.

Do you miss me too?

Do I want you to?

Do I want you to?
Want you to...

I want you to
Want
Me

Too...
